Shakespeare Up Close Director

The Orange Tree is looking for an exceptional theatre director to direct an abridged version of Romeo &Juliet which will play to around 3,500 young people in spring 2020 as part of our Shakespeare Up Close project.

Shakespeare Up Close aims to give students a thrilling experience of Shakespeare in performance that is lively and engaging whilst encouraging a deep understanding of both the language and key themes of the play.

The director will be required to work within the following parameters:

  • The production must play at under 90 minutes and should use a total of 5 actors – an edited script with suggested doublings will be provided, but any workable ideas will be considered, and all genders can be cast in any part.

  • The production should be suitable for everyone aged 12+, with the majority of audiences expected to be studying the play for English GCSE.

  • The production will both play at the Orange Tree Theatre, and tour into schools (where it will be performed in the round) so the design needs to be flexible and easily transported.

  • The production will play to a wide range of school groups across Richmond, Hounslow, Ealing and beyond; casting should reflect the diversity of the audience

  • A 3 week rehearsal period will begin on Monday 13 Jan 2020, with the production opening at the Orange Tree on Friday 7 Feb. Following performances at the Orange Tree, the director will be required to re-rehearse any changes necessary for touring into schools (max 2 days on 24 and 25 Feb).

  • A first draft of the edited script is available here – this is just a place to start, we are very open to discussions around other options for doubling / editing.

TO APPLY please send your CV along with EITHER:

  • A one page description of your ideas for the production

  • A 5 min long film of you talking about your ideas (sent via WeTansfer, dropbox, or to a link online)

In your application you might want to consider the following questions:

  • How will you make the production both accessible and engaging for a younger audience?

  • How will you work within the parameters set out above?

  • What would be the main impression you’d want audiences to leave the performance with?
